Take a drive to visit some of Tasmania’s iconic places

Southern Tasmania offers visitors a great variety of destinations to visit.  From the Hobart waterfront, just 5 minutes away, to visiting Port Arthur (2 hours) or taking a drive down the channel (half day). There is plenty to see and do.

Just 20 minutes drive from North Hobart, Richmond is an ideal place to enjoy the food, wine and heritage of the beautiful Coal River Valley.

Nant Distillery

Nant Distillery

Just an hour’s drive  from Hobart is the historic Nant Estate (circa 1821). Purchased by the Batt family in 2004, it continues to be lovingly and meticulously restored to its former glory. It is the proud home to the Nant Distilling Company, producers of the internationally renowned Nant Single Malt Whisky. Book a tour or book for lunch.

Mona

Mona

The Museum of Old and New Art – Mona is Australia’s largest private museum and arguably one of the most controversial private collections of modern art and antiquities in the world. Described by its owner as a ‘subversive adult Disneyland’, the collection ranges from ancient Egyptian mummies to some of the world’s most infamous and thought-provoking contemporary art.

Visitors can also catch a high speed ferry from Hobart’s waterfront for a 30-minute ride up the Derwent River right to the steps of the museum.

Mona is open six days a week, closed Tuesdays.

Hobart Waterfront & Salamanca

Hobart Waterfront & Salamanca

For those with transport, just a 10 minute drive takes you to the Salamanca waterfront bustling with activities, restaurants, pubs and cafes. The famous Salamanca market runs every Saturday from 8am to 3pm. From the waterfront you can get a ferry to Mona or just have a morning tea cruise on the Derwent.

Barilla Bay is a working oyster farm located near the airport, approximately 20 minutes drive away. The  restaurant, which overlooks the spectacular scenery of the bay, puts a focus on fresh, local produce.  Barilla Bay also offers private and public oyster farm tours with complimentary shucked oysters.

Bangor Wine & Oyster Shed

Bangor Wine & Oyster Shed is an award winning cellar door, farm gate shop and restaurant located in Dunalley – about a 45 minute drive away. Bangor offer a range of cool climate wines, freshly shucked oysters and local produce.  Bangor focus on a ‘paddock to plate’ philosophy: what you enjoy is harvested from the vines and the sea before you. Just 45 minutes’ drive from Hobart, pop in on your way to Port Arthur or set aside a lazy Sunday afternoon to enjoy a picnic during summer or a cozy fireside lunch in winter.  Open 10am to 5pm, 7 days a week. Bookings are recommended, particularly on weekends.

Salamanca market operates every Saturday from around 8am through to around 2pm. It is a vibrant place with something for everyone and is well worth a visit. If you’re not there on a Saturday its still worth a visit to the Salamanca shops, galleries, cafes,pubs and restaurants.
